Special Pleading

From FreeThoughtPedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Also known as a "double standard", the Special Pleading logical fallacy involves referencing a rule or process, then suspending the rule when it doesn't suit your purpose.

The common theist Argument From Design claims that all designs need a designer. If you see a watch, you supposedly know there is a creator. If you ask a theist "Who created God then?" Their response is a Special Pleading. They exempt their own rules and suggest that God does not need a creator.
